Mother's Grieving Heart

Book: Crystal, …Mother's Grieving Heart

On November 10, 2000 Maria's daughter Crystal was killed in a terrible accident. Maria went through what no mother in the world wants or expects to go through.

Go To Site…

To moms who have suffered the loss of a child:

When Maria was faced with the death of her child, all the books she read provided the same answer. This answer was not good enough. She began to write poetry. Her poetry was a way for her to find the answers to the terrible crisis that she could not find in any book. Through writing her poetry, Maria became closer to God and she found during her journey, that God's mercy is a sufficient answer to any crisis or devastating situation.

Those poems are now available in the book, "Crystal, A Mother's Grieving Heart" published by Lorton Valley Star. It is available in Occoquan at the Coffee House of Occoquan and at Attic Treasures. It is also available online from Maria's web site.

VDOT Punchlist

If you find any signage, pavement or other road hazards needing VDOT attention you should contact VDOT and forward your complaint to Publisher @LortonValleyStar.com so we can track the State response. Below is the punch list we have already.

It turns out that a couple of our items are not under VDOT perview where those new developments are still private.

Notice Given Response Solution
1 Market Place signs
Signs have been removed along Lorton Market Place: A STOP sign in front of Shoppers and a median marker have been missing for over a month.
The missing STOP sign is the responsibility of the developer as VDOT
does not own Lorton Market Place.
Not yet replaced
2 Lorton Station chuck hole and Hatched out lane needed for parking at Lorton Station
Lorton Station Blvd. is not under VDOT control. No solution
3 Illegal signs unreachable
Illegal commercial signs on utility poles on RT 1 across from Gunston Plaza are inaccessible to Adopt-A-Highway crews. Need to be removed.
Bob, we don't have the resources to remove all these signs but I want
too bring this to your attention.
Not removed
4 Snow route sign obscures traffic sign
Snow route sign is in front of “right lane only turn right” sign on Rolling Road north of Alban / Pohick causing a contest for the one lane past DeLong. Signs should be separated by feet not inches.
Mark -
Can your staff please review and fix.
Joan

Solution

Snow route sign moved to lane sign post; duplicate post removed. Satisfactory.

5 Speed Limit sign unnoticable.
Speed limit sign post on Pohick Road north bound After Lorton Station Boulevard and approaching LaGrange St. is unnoticeable on the inside of the curve where the roadway widens to two lanes plus right turn lane and sidewalk. Sign should be closer to the intersection and perhaps on the median where it will be seen ahead not on the dark inside of the curve. Should be 40 mph.
Mark -
Would you please have your staff review and respond to me.
Joan

Shall do, this may require TE which means a study. I will push to speed up the process.

Expect to move sign north of LaGrange.

Solution:

Sign moved to north side of Lagrange St. where motorists will see it only one lane over on straight road so headlights will illuminate it just before they cross the sway back bridge.

6 Dangerous area on Pohick Road
Pohick Road has a poorly lit hill between the wide area with parking and sidewalks the Cullum Street exit of Pohick Estates. This causes two resultant problems: One is that exit from Pohick Estates is blind in the East looking direction. Second this is a bad place for a bus stop and the path along the tree margin of Pohick Estates Park is littered with lots of trash where it seems to be a hang-out or hide-out. Short term solution: Removing a few trees and moving the bus stop back to the wide area of the road would make the area safer. Long term solution: Cutting down the hill.

Barry Harrison has responded; Has looked at area; Checking long term plans; will take up issue of placement of bus stop. Suggests making lighting and tree issue with Hylands office.

Supervisor Hyland's office responded will get on it.

The regional Park Authority maintenance officer is looking into the
issue and will report back soon.

I looked at the area and we will schedule selected pruning of some lower branches and a few small scrub trees. This will give more visibility off the edge of the road. Should have the work done by next week. (Oct 24?)

Joe Nilson
Area 3 Manager, FCPA
7 Missing Median Marker on Lorton Road at Gunston Cove Road and I95 north ramps. Wooden post has been knocked down. maintenance crews will re-install the marker sign that was
knocked down on Lorton Road. Doug Holsapple
Replaced!
8 Missing Median Marker on Pohick Road at intersection of Alban. Post has been knocked down. Signs are scaled for trucks not modern cars with sharply focused headlights. Posts aren't reflective at height drivers are looking.   Replaced!
9 Speed limit disjunct at new Ox Road Occoquan bridge.
Motorists are encouraged to head down the hill at 55mph only to find out when they are flying down the hill that the speed limit approaching the new bridge is 35 mph. This is routinely violated. Heading north, motorists are expected wait to take on the hill at 35 then accelerate to 55 on the steepest grade. VDOT isn't helping us be fuel efficient and the Fairfax County Police are again taking advantage of the trap.
Given the recent change in roadway characteristics on Route 123 as a
result of the bridge and related roadway improvements, please be advised
that VDOT's Traffic Engineering Section is conducting a speed study on
Route 123 in this area to determine what adjustments in the speed limit
may be necessary.

35 mph downhill signs removed.

Replaced by 40 mph zone warning beginning at Commerce Street.

10 Median Marker Hanging upside down. Bolt missing at ramps to I95 South Bound from Lorton Road.   Repaired
